What people said about
the Sri Lankan Cultural Shows in Scotland
I have had the pleasure of attending the Glasgow
Sri Lankan Communities’ New Year Celebrations in both 2005
and 2006.
The Cultural Show which is held each year as
part of these celebrations is colourful and entertaining and I
think the organisers can all be justifiably proud of their work.
The imagination, talent and positive spirit which has been shown
by the Sri Lankan Community in making these celebrations possible
serves as an example to Communities across Scotland.
Scotland is becoming known more and more around
the world as one of the most culturally diverse nations. Strengthening
the links between our different nationalities, faiths and ethnic
groups helps to make Scotland a thriving and inclusive country
today. I believe that the wealth of different cultures represented
by the many and diverse communities in our country will serve
to make Scotland stronger in the future, both economically and
culturally. Events like these add so much to the vibrancy of life
in our country.
We are all the stronger for celebrations like
the Sri Lankan New Year.

I was delighted to have been able to attend the
Sri Lankan Cultural Show, organised by the Scotlanka Network and
held in St Brendan’s Primary School in Yoker. The event
helped to provide an exhibition of the vibrant culture of Sri
Lanka and also to highlight the positive contribution that is
made by the Sri Lankan community in Scotland. The show brought
together many different members of the local community and I look
forward to attending future events over the coming years.

I was delighted to be guest of honour at your
inaugural Cultural Show in Glasgow, which was a fascinating insight
into the music and culture of the peoples of Sri Lanka.
It was great to see talented young people from Scotland and Sri
Lanka mixing and learning about each other's lives. I wish ScotLanka
Network every success and look forward to attending the next cultural
show. I also look forward to the day when our government makes
Sri Lankan people, and all new citizens, as welcome in our country
as they have made me welcome in their community.
Rosie Kane
Member of the Scottish Parliament
I thoroughly enjoyed the Sri Lankan Cultural
Show on the 2 occasions that I received an invitation.
I was very impressed by the effort, which all the participants
made, their performance and the work that went into preparing
the colourful costumes.
I was also impressed by the friendship displayed by the 2 Sri
Lankan cultures towards each other.
I wish ScotLanka Network and its organisers every success in the
future.
Councillor Craig Roberton
Glasgow City Council
I was more than happy to accept the kind invitation
to attend the inaugural Cultural Show to represent St. Clare’s
Primary school and the community of Drumchapel. I found the show
visually energetic and uplifting while providing great insight
into Sri Lankan culture.
I would like to thank the Scotlanka Network for
creating this informative show as it also highlighted the important
contribution the Sri Lankan community have within Scotland.

Sri Lankan Cultural show was a great experience,
showing how our cultures can blend together
very well. I wish our Government could witness this and learn
from these wonderful talented people who organised the event within
17 days to celebrate the Sinhalese & Tamil New Year Festival.
Well done ScotLanka !!

The Sri Lankan Cultural Show held in St Brendan's
Primary School, Yoker, truly represented the statement, "One
Scotland, many cultures" as promised by the organisers ScotLanka
Network. The colourful and energetic displays of Sri Lankan culture
were wonderful, with the traditional dancers bringing a taste
of Sri Lankan culture to the audience.
We look forward to our next opportunity to experience
Scottish and Sri Lankan cultures working together to inform, educate
and entertain."

Once again I was pleased to accept the invitation
to participate in the Sri Lankan Cultural Show, I thoroughly enjoyed
the insight, as did my wife and son. The colourful and talented
performances were delightful and a credit to all who worked to
make it possible. I am sure ‘SCOTLANKA NETWORK’ will
go from strength to strength whilst continuing to positively develop
cultural awareness as well as harmonious integration.
Well done, and wishing us all the best for the
future.

At Anniesland College we have students from Sri
Lanka, who now live in Glasgow, who contribute greatly to college
life. It was such a delightful experience to share with the Sri
Lankan and Scottish Community the Sri Lankan Culture Show in St.
Brendan's Primary School in Yoker. The event showcased Sri Lankan
culture and all who attended were able to share and enjoy a rich
cultural event. Well done to the Sri Lankan community for organising
such a memorable event and thank you for your invitation.
Linda J. McTavish CBE
Principal, Anniesland College
It was indeed another memorable event for us Sri
Lankans who relish a purely Sri Lankan show of this calibre, in
a desert, devoid of our own cultural activities. We consider this
an incentive for our younger generation of Sri Lankans to get
a taste of our culture. It was also a show that displayed their
inherent talents.
We congratulate ScotLanka Network for taking this opportunity
to depict certain aspects of our rich, 2500 year old cultural
heritage and present it in an alien environment, to the people
in Bonnie Scotland. The inter mingling of our cultures, especially
the coordination of Scottish bagpipes along with the Sri Lankan
drums was quite remarkable. The enhancement of social harmony
is most commendable.
Continue the good work!
